I first wrote this post in November 2017, but it being World Mental Health Day today, I felt it was time to bring it up again.
Why Live a Beautiful Life? Since I’ve started this blog, there’s been something I’ve wanted to address. But it wasn’t until this morning that I realised that I wanted to explain why live a beautiful life.
I realised that the blog’s aim may be misleading, or confusing. I don’t want to create a blog where I write that everything is amazing and perfect every day. Because that’s not the reality, and I don’t think that it’s a realistic aim to pursue.
The last few years, I have embarked on a huge personal journey. Big life events demonstrate this, and are obvious enough in themselves. But more than that, through these events, in the background, I have been rediscovering myself.
I have suffered from anxiety and stress from a very young age. In my teenager years I then suffered from depression and have had multiple occurences of this in my adult life.
As much as I went to see my doctor and tried medication, I found that alternative therapies work best for me. I understand that everyone is different, but for me personally, I have realised over the last few years that when I get especially down or even depressed, it is usually because I’m following a path in life that I really don’t want to, but feel I have to.
As a teen I started feeling symptoms of depression because I wasn’t enjoying or thriving in the specialty section I was studying at high school. When I realised I could change, and did, I immediately started feeling a lot better. As an adult, there were a few episodes… from a really tough year in Paris, to feeling low after the birth of my first child up to feeling stuck in a job that seemed to be getting the better of me. There is a clear pattern with them all… If I try and pursue a route that I feel I have to pursue, it may cost me my happiness. And as a direct result, it will prevail me from living a beautiful life.
Now, before you start thinking that I’m now off doing whatever it is I want to do without obligations, let me say that of course, in day to day life, there are always things that will not bring joy or happiness, but nevertheless need doing. From doing my self assessment and sole trader accounts, telling off the kids, to food shopping and putting clothes away in what feels like evey 5 minutes (seriously…. it takes me so long and we don’t even have that many clothes between us! anyone else?!). And of course there are a lot more things that pop up in day to day life that we would quite happily ignore.
Over the years, I have been looking at ways to make small changes in my life, and find out how to inject more happiness, more joy… and yes, more beauty.
I started using “Live a beautiful life” as a motto for my floristry business, as it ties in with the effect I wanted my flowers to have. But as time went on, I realised just how much I was trying to incorporate this into my own personal life. Living a beautiful life has become a lifestyle choice. A way to find the good, the beauty, and to focus on that as we move forward in life.
Personally, leaving my job as a lawyer, retraining and becoming self employed, as well as supporting my husband in his wish to leave his lawyer job and retrain in garden design, well, those choices have never once been regretted. They have opened so many new doors, new opportunies for us. They have also made us happier, and more relaxed, which means we are nicer to hang around with and get to have more fun as a family too.
It’s not to say that it’s easy. Our income has drastically reduced, which in turn has meant we have had to make many changes to our lifestyle. But there is no denying we are happier now than we were before.
I appreciate that those choices are quite drastic changes for anyone, so clearly, this blog isn’t going to be about telling you that you should all leave your corporate jobs behind you to set up your own business (although if you’re thinking about it, definitely look into it!!). Although I will bring up my own actions and choices a fair amount I expect, ultimately, this blog will be about showing you that, if you feel stuck, a little unhappy or if you are simply curious into how you could live a (more?) beautiful life, then there are many, many (!) ways in which you could inject a little happiness and beauty. And we are here to help and inspire you! From blog posts, product reviews to ultimately an online shop and workshops, we are very excited to share this journey with you!
So this blog is very much part of my own personal journey, but is also here for you. Because I truly believe that small changes can go a long way into living a beautiful life.
What does mental health day represent for you? What does living a beautiful life mean to you? The past few years have had their ups and downs for me, but since trying to live a more beautiful life I have been on an incredible journey, leading me to live in France today. I still have my ups and downs , and no doubt always will. But speaking up about it and getting to understand myself more has truly helped over the years. Most of all, I believe in being kind, always. You never know what one person is going through, why they’re behaving the way they are. Being kind, smiling, being there, can make a huge difference.0
